Results are clear ! 14 persons answered to this survey. This sample was composed by 7 Women and 7 men. I asked 7 questions :

Do you know what a fair trade product is ?

(Answer) 100% of persons answered that they knew what a fair product was. This high score is very encouraging for the rest of the survey.

2. By what means have you discovered fair trade ?

(Answer) The Answer ”Media” is the most representative because 10 choose this answer, it represents near 71%. Next specific relationship with the friends cercle and members of family.

3. For what products have you heard of fair trade ?

As I discovered during my researches, the consumer goods in everyday life as coffee, cocoa are the most quoted. After we find clothes, handmade products and tea. So logically, consumers should buy this typ of products.

4. Have you ever bought a fair trade product ?

8 persons out of 14 answered “yes”, it is near the half who has never bought a fair trade product despite they know the fair trade.

5. What is your purchase rate for fair trade products a month ?

50% don’t buy fair trade product. The other majority buys only 2 fair trade products a month. It means that the consumers of western countries are attached to the big brand and don’t want to change their consumer behaviour, even if the consumption is considered as “ethic”

12 The majority wants to fight poverty in developing countries. Although we know fair trade products, every consumer go on to buy its famous brand of coffee, cocoa, tea, even if they want to improve the economic situation of countries.

In context of global economy and marketing studies, I have chosen to work with needs of consumers about the fair trade products and their consumer behaviour. I think that this survey will answer to some questions… why sales of fair trade products stay minor.

Where can consumers find fair trade products in France ?

Everyone can buy fair trade products in specialized store, but since 1998, the big supermarkets have being sold the fair trade products as Monoprix (first one), Cora or Atac, Auchan, Carrefour, Champion, Géant, Hyper/Super U, Intermarché, Leclerc, Supermarché Match.

In order to distribute the fair trade products, four associations collaborate on the communication media. They are Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International (F), International Fair Trade Association (I) , Network of European Worldshops (N) and European Fair Trade Association (E). They developped 7 principles; that 7 principles are based on :

the sustainable development (Creating opportunities for economically disadvantaged producers )
deal fairly and respectfully with trading partners
develop producers’ independence
payment of a fair price
gender equity
good working conditions
environmental protection

Appeared in the 1940’s in the United States of America, the fairtrade is popular abroad. In Europe and particularly in France, the fairtrade is booming in 1970’s thanks to actions lead by Pierre Priest in order to help Bangladesh. We define the fair trade as an organized social movement which promotes standards for international labour and social policy in areas related to production of Fairtrade labeled and unlabelled goods. As a general rule the movement focuses in particular on exports from developing countries to developed countries.
